Everybody wants to be part of the Deion Sanders experience at Jackson State.
And some will explore every avenue to get there. Even if it means contacting the coach’s mother.
The first-year head coach has impressed on the recruiting trail in the offseason, earning JSU what appears to be on paper a war chest of impactful in-coming athletes.
Sanders and his staff have been able to lure three-and- four-star recruits from the grips of Power Five programs. The NCAA transfer portal has also been a friend of the program, too.
But the Pro Football Hall of Famer and NFL analyst shared the story of someone contacting his mother to help consummate a recruiting pitch.
“Somebody called my mama the other day,” said Sanders. “We got a four-star kid that called my mama the other day. How do you get my mama’s phone number?”
Sanders, who did not identify the player, explained the situation was an example of how much interest there is in the program.
“They knew somebody that knew my sister that got in touch with my mama,” he said. “So I shoot a message to the linebackers coach, they do the homework and the kid turns out to be a dog. It’s crazy stuff like that that’s been happening.”
